letters to a young artist

A piano recital inspired by Rainer Maria Rilke’s Letters to a Young Poet.

Educated in Germany, Dora Pejačević (1885–1923) was deeply influenced by German late Romanticism, particularly the music of Brahms, Liszt and Strauss.

Bringing together music by Schubert/Liszt, Brahms, Pejačević and Fazıl Say, this programme reflects my own journey as a young Turkish artist living in Europe and my search for an individual artistic voice.

Programme

Franz Schubert / Franz Liszt — Der Müller und der Bach, Ungeduld and Gretchen am Spinnrade
Johannes Brahms — Seven Fantasies, Op. 116

Dora Pejačević — Piano Sonata in B minor, Op. 36
Fazıl Say — Black Earth

“To be an artist means: not to calculate or count; to ripen like the tree that does not force its sap, that stands confident in the storms of spring without the fear that summer may not come. It does come. But it comes only to those who are patient, who live as though eternity lay before them - so calm, so vast, and so carefree. I learn this daily, learn it through pain, to which I am grateful: Patience is everything!”

— RAINER MARIA RILKE
